Amethyst - February Birthstone

Amethysts are the purple variety of the quartz family. All quartz gemstones have a hardness of 7 out of 10 on the Moh’s Scale; therefore, amethysts are suitable for everyday wear. They are regularly heated to improve the saturation and depth of color.

Did you know that amethysts were once thought to be the tears of Bacchus, the god of wine? It was believed that they could prevent drunkenness. Amethysts are the traditional gift for a 6th wedding anniversary.

Citrine is also from the quartz family. The cognac to bright orange color warms up the deep hue of amethysts. Ametrine is a heated variety of quartz in which half the stone’s body is citrine, and half is amethyst. Diamonds are always a welcome accent stone to add more light refraction, meaning more sparkle.
