Celebrating 80 Years of Jae’s Jewelers on Miracle Mile: Honoring Legacy During Coral Gables’ Centennial

As Coral Gables celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2025, it’s only fitting to spotlight one of Miracle Mile’s most enduring and beloved businesses—Jae’s Jewelers. For 80 years, Jae’s Jewelers has been more than just a jewelry store; it has been a cornerstone of the community, a witness to the city’s evolution, and a trusted partner in life’s most precious moments.

A Storied History: From Watchmaking Roots to Fine Jewelry Excellence

Jae’s Jewelers began its journey in 1945, when George Hornik, a skilled watchmaker and Navy veteran, opened a modest watch repair stand in downtown Miami. With his wife Helena by his side, George’s dedication to quality and service quickly earned the business a loyal following.

In 1956, recognizing the promise of Coral Gables and the newly branded Miracle Mile, the Horniks relocated their store to 237 Miracle Mile—a move that would cement their legacy in the heart of “The City Beautiful”.

Over the decades, Jae’s Jewelers grew from a watch repair shop into a premier, full-service jewelry store. Bruce Hornik, George and Helena’s son, joined the business in 1972, bringing with him a Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Under Bruce’s leadership, the store expanded its offerings to include custom jewelry, estate pieces, appraisals, and expert repairs. Today, the third generation—Bruce’s daughters, Jennifer and Jillian, both GIA Graduate Gemologists—continue the family tradition, ensuring that every customer receives the same personalized service and expertise that have defined Jae’s for eight decades.

The Evolution of Miracle Mile: Coral Gables’ Iconic Shopping Destination

Miracle Mile, the vibrant commercial heart of Coral Gables, has long been synonymous with elegance, culture, and community. Conceived in the 1940s and officially named in 1955, Miracle Mile was envisioned as a high-end shopping boulevard, thanks to the vision of developers like George K. Zain, known as the “Father of Miracle Mile”. Over the years, this half-mile stretch has become one of South Florida’s most sought-after shopping destinations, lined with boutiques, restaurants, art galleries, and, of course, legacy businesses like Jae’s Jewelers.

Jae’s Jewelers is not just a tenant on Miracle Mile—it is its oldest retail store, a living testament to the area’s enduring appeal and the spirit of entrepreneurship that built Coral Gables. As Miracle Mile has evolved, so too has Jae’s, embracing innovation while honoring tradition.

A Deep Connection to Coral Gables’ Centennial Celebrations

As Coral Gables celebrates its centennial, Jae’s Jewelers stands as a proud participant in the city’s journey. The store has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce’s Retailer of the Year and the prestigious Diamond Vanguard Award. In 2020, the Coral Gables Mayor issued a proclamation honoring Jae’s 75th anniversary, underscoring the store’s importance to the city’s heritage.

Jae’s Jewelers has always believed in giving back. The Hornik family is deeply involved in local organizations, charitable initiatives, and the Business Improvement District, helping to shape a vibrant and welcoming downtown for residents and visitors alike. Their commitment to community mirrors the values that have made Coral Gables a model city for a century—a place where neighbors become friends, and businesses become family.
